Tragic Fall Claims Life of Teen at Abandoned Filming Site

Post by : Mina Rahman

Authorities have reported the death of a 19-year-old woman who fell from the roof of an abandoned five-story building in Atlanta, Georgia, which was once a filming location for Netflix’s acclaimed series Stranger Things.

The incident occurred around 1 am on December 19 at the Briarcliff campus of Emory University. Known as Building A, this site was part of the Georgia Mental Health Institute and has also featured in the series The Vampire Diaries. Despite its connection to popular culture, officials warn that the building has been unsafe and off-limits to the public for years.

The victim has been identified as Leah Palmirotto. Reports indicate she entered the premises with friends, allegedly climbing over a chain-link fence that surrounds the site. Despite multiple signs indicating “No Trespassing,” the area remains a hotspot for curiosity seekers.

According to police investigations, Leah and her companions were exploring the dilapidated structure when the tragic fall occurred. It’s believed she may have slipped or stepped onto a precarious area in the dimly lit building, resulting in her fatal injuries.

Originally constructed in the 1960s, Emory University obtained the building in the 1990s. While plans for its demolition were announced in 2022 to develop a senior living facility, the location continues to stand unused and poses significant safety hazards including unstable flooring and poor visibility.

This abandoned site has garnered attention from fans of Stranger Things, as it was repurposed as Hawkins National Laboratory in the series. Its ominous, dilapidated aesthetic contributes to its allure, yet also raises concerns over trespassing incidents.

Leah's father, Todd Palmirotto Jr., described her as a vibrant, adventurous soul, and expressed his sorrow over the incident. He urged others to think twice before entering abandoned locations, emphasizing the inherent dangers.

The Emory University police department continues their investigation into the circumstances of Leah Palmirotto's untimely death.
