Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has categorically rejected Russia’s assertions that Ukraine instigated a drone strike on one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residences. Zelensky accused Moscow of fabricating these claims to disrupt ongoing peace negotiations.
In response, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that Kyiv utilized 91 long-range drones in a coordinated attack targeting Putin’s official residence in the Novgorod region. Lavrov stated that all drones were intercepted and neutralized by Russian air defenses, with no injuries or damages reported.
Lavrov cautioned that, due to what he termed as the “final degeneration” of Ukraine’s government, Russia might reconsider its position in peace discussions. He, however, reassured that Russia remains committed to negotiations with the United States.
Zelensky branded the accusations as “typical Russian lies,” designed to rationalize ongoing military actions against Ukraine. He pointed out that Russia has previously targeted government buildings in Kyiv.
The Ukrainian leader also urged the global community to voice concern against Russia’s attempts to stifle peace efforts. He underscored the necessity of international support to achieve a lasting resolution.
These claims surfaced just after peace discussions took place between the US and Ukraine in Florida, where Zelensky and the US President deliberated on a revised approach to end the conflict. Zelensky expressed optimism about concluding the war by 2026, emphasizing Ukraine’s reliance on continued US backing.
He voiced skepticism regarding Putin’s commitment to peace, asserting his mistrust toward the Russian leader and his belief that Putin has no real interest in Ukraine’s success.
On the topic of security assurances, Zelensky disclosed that the US has proposed 15-year guarantees for Ukraine, with a formal agreement nearing completion. Nevertheless, unresolved issues such as territorial disputes and the status of the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and the Donbas region linger.
At present, Russia holds approximately 75% of Donetsk and nearly all of Luhansk, areas that make up the Donbas region. Moscow has rejected critical aspects of the proposed peace framework, which complicates resolution efforts.
Following the US-Ukraine talks, the White House indicated a “positive call” between the US President and Putin. A Kremlin advisor revealed Putin's concerns regarding the alleged drone assault, which came shortly after what the US characterized as a productive negotiation round.
The US President expressed shock and anger upon learning about the incident, cautioning that it might influence the US stance towards Zelensky. Initially hesitating, he later confirmed that he was informed about the attack by Putin and stated that an investigation would follow.
