Tragic Boat Capsizing in Nigeria Leaves 25 Dead and 14 Missing

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

A tragic incident unfolded in Yobe State, northeastern Nigeria, as a passenger boat capsized, leading to the death of at least 25 individuals. This accident stands as one of the most devastating water-related disasters in the region for 2023, occurring Saturday evening while numerous passengers were returning from a bustling market.

The vessel, described as a large wooden canoe, had departed from Adiyani village in Jigawa State, heading towards Garbi in Yobe. The boat overturned shortly before 8 p.m. local time while attempting to cross the river, resulting in passengers being thrown into the water.

Local authorities reported that the canoe was carrying 52 individuals at the time of the incident. Thirteen individuals were successfully rescued, but rescue teams recovered 25 bodies from the river, with 14 people still reported missing. Search and rescue operations were ongoing through the night and continued into Sunday, involving divers, volunteers, and security forces from surrounding towns.

Witnesses indicated that most victims were traders who had been at the market for the day, traveling home collectively. Families grew concerned when the boat did not arrive at its expected time, instigating a search that led to the discovery of the capsized canoe partway along the route.

According to police, initial investigations suggest the capsizing was caused by water leakage and potential overloading. Authorities highlighted that safety regulations prohibiting nighttime navigation were disregarded. Should the captain of the boat be found alive, legal repercussions for negligence are anticipated.

In Nigeria, incidents of fatal boat accidents are sadly common, particularly in rural regions where rivers serve as key transportation routes. Lax safety protocols, overcrowding, and nighttime travel practice continue to jeopardize lives. Similar occurrences, such as a recent incident in Niger State, further underscore the persistent hazards faced by river users throughout the nation.

As families in Yobe and Jigawa states grieve for the victims, rescue teams remain on-site in hopes of locating those who are still missing and providing closure to the affected communities.
