Yami Gautam Critiques Film Hype, Applauds Aditya Dhar Before Dhurandhar Release

Post by : Mina Rahman

On the eve of the much-anticipated release of Dhurandhar, actress Yami Gautam took to social media to voice her disapproval of the growing trend of generating artificial film hype via paid promotions. Labeling this practice as “extortion-like,” she expressed her worries about its detrimental effects on the Indian film industry.

In her heartfelt message, Yami articulated how certain marketing strategies can manipulate public perception, often resulting in detrimental narratives when payments are not made. She stated, “This so-called trend of providing money under the guise of marketing a film to guarantee positive 'hype,' or else face persistent negative criticism before the film's release—feels nothing short of extortion.” She cautioned that such actions have turned into a harmful epidemic, diminishing genuine talent and affecting the creative landscape, thereby harming actors, filmmakers, and audiences alike.

Yami praised the Southern film industry for its solidarity against these deceitful practices and urged filmmakers, producers, and actors across India to unite in discouraging these trends, thereby fostering a healthier cinematic environment. Renowned actor Hrithik Roshan also supported her sentiments, highlighting the importance of honest journalism and the necessity of freedom of expression. He remarked, “Only true opinions can provide feedback that aids in our evolution. Without freedom of expression and truth to guide us, what job satisfaction can anyone expect?”

Further, she commended her husband, director Aditya Dhar, for his unwavering commitment to the project, asserting, “I express this as the wife of an exceptionally honest man who has dedicated everything to this film with relentless hard work, vision, and perseverance, alongside his team, to create something that I believe India will be proud of.” Yami concluded with a reminder that the essence of filmmaking should not be clouded by marketing agendas, urging audiences to form their evaluations of the film after viewing it.

Dhurandhar has encountered legal challenges ahead of its release. The family of the late Major Mohit Sharma, recipient of the Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal, approached the Delhi High Court seeking to halt the film's release, claiming it depicted Major Sharma’s life and military career without permission. However, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) approved the film for release with an ‘A’ certification following certain edits, including selective removals and modifications, while the overall running time remained intact.

The Sharma family contended that the film’s trailer and promotional materials too closely mirrored Major Sharma’s counter-terrorism efforts and undercover operations in Kashmir. They argued that his life should not be commodified, citing breaches of privacy, dignity, and emotional rights.

Written, directed, and co-produced by Aditya Dhar under Jio Studios and B62 Studios, Dhurandhar boasts a star-studded cast featuring Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal, alongside supporting performances from Sara Arjun and Rakesh Bedi. Scheduled for release on December 5, the film has already garnered considerable attention, driven by its compelling subject matter, illustrious cast, and pre-release dialogues.
