The government of Venezuela has freed an additional 88 individuals linked to protests that followed the July 2024 elections. This marks the second significant release of prisoners within just two weeks, following an earlier release of 99 individuals on December 26. In total, 187 detainees have been released during this period.
An official statement from the government describes these releases as part of a “thorough review process” initiated by President Nicolas Maduro. Officials noted that this process is continuing and is intended to reassess the cases of those arrested during the unrest subsequent to the elections.
The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners, a non-governmental organization, has confirmed that it verified the release of at least 55 detainees, most of whom were released from the Tocoron prison situated in central Venezuela.
Nonetheless, various NGOs have raised doubts regarding the official numbers, skeptical that the government has truly released as many individuals as stated. Independent estimates indicate that close to 900 political prisoners remain incarcerated in Venezuela, many of whom were arrested prior to the election.
The Venezuelan administration contends that it does not hold political prisoners, asserting that those detained are accused of attempting to destabilize the nation through illegal activities. This remains a contentious issue between the government and human rights advocates.
These releases occur under increasing U.S. pressure, as the Trump administration has called on President Maduro to step down. The United States has enhanced its military presence in the Caribbean, conducted strikes on drug trafficking vessels near Venezuela's shores, and seized two crude oil tankers belonging to Venezuela, intensifying the already fraught diplomatic relations.
