powerful explosions shook Venezuela’s capital Caracas, marking a serious escalation in tensions between the United States and the government of President Nicolas Maduro. A U.S. official confirmed that American forces carried out strikes inside Venezuela, following months of strong warnings and threats by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Residents across Caracas reported loud blasts, aircraft flying overhead, and thick black smoke rising into the night sky. Videos shared on social media showed bright flashes and large smoke clouds near military zones. Many people expressed fear and confusion as the explosions continued for more than an hour. Parts of southern Caracas, close to a major military base, also experienced a power blackout.
The Venezuelan government said the attacks were not limited to Caracas. Officials claimed that strikes also hit the nearby states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira. In response, President Maduro declared a national emergency and ordered the mobilization of defense forces across the country. Authorities said they were taking steps to protect key sites and maintain control.
This military action comes after a long period of rising pressure from Washington. President Trump has repeatedly accused Maduro of staying in power through a rigged election and has openly suggested that it would be “smart” for him to leave office. While Trump has not clearly explained his full goals, reports say he has privately pushed for Maduro’s removal.
The U.S. has steadily increased its military presence near Venezuela in recent months. An aircraft carrier, warships, and advanced fighter jets have been deployed in the Caribbean region. The Trump administration has also expanded economic sanctions and announced efforts to block Venezuelan oil exports, further tightening pressure on the oil-rich nation.
Venezuela’s government strongly rejected the U.S. action, accusing Washington of trying to seize the country’s oil and mineral resources. In an official statement, Caracas said the United States would not succeed and promised to defend national sovereignty. Maduro’s administration has long denied U.S. claims that it supports drug trafficking, calling the accusations false and politically motivated.
The Pentagon referred questions to the White House, which declined to comment on the strikes. This lack of clarity has added to global concern about what may come next. Several countries have previously criticized U.S. actions in the region, warning that military force could worsen instability and lead to civilian harm.
As Venezuelans wake up to the aftermath of the explosions, fear and uncertainty remain high. With tensions already stretched to the limit, many worry that these strikes could lead to a wider conflict. The situation continues to develop, with the world closely watching how both sides respond in the coming days.
