US Lawmakers Urge Taiwan to Approve $40 Billion Defence Budget

Post by : Saif Nasser

A group of American lawmakers has called on Taiwan to quickly approve its delayed $40 billion defence budget, highlighting growing concerns over regional security and rising tensions with China. The message came during a visit to Taipei, where discussions focused on strengthening Taiwan’s ability to defend itself.

The visiting delegation from the United States stressed that the defence plan is important not only for Taiwan but also for stability in the wider region. They said that delays in passing the budget could weaken preparedness at a time when threats are increasing.

At the center of this issue is Taiwan’s effort to modernize its military. The proposed budget includes funding for advanced weapons, defence systems, and training programs. These steps are seen as necessary to improve the island’s ability to respond to any potential conflict.

The lawmakers made it clear that strong defence is the best way to prevent conflict. By building a capable military, Taiwan can act as a deterrent, making it less likely that tensions will turn into direct confrontation.

The situation is closely linked to China’s position on Taiwan. Beijing considers Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to bring it under its control. In recent years, China has increased military activity near Taiwan, including air and naval exercises.

Because of this, Taiwan has been under pressure to strengthen its defence systems. However, political disagreements within Taiwan have slowed down the approval of the budget. Some lawmakers have raised concerns about the size of the spending and how the money will be used.

The visit by U.S. lawmakers shows continued support for Taiwan. The United States has long been a key partner, providing both military equipment and political backing. While the U.S. does not officially recognize Taiwan as a separate country, it maintains strong unofficial ties and supports its security.

Experts say that passing the defence budget would send a strong message. It would show that Taiwan is serious about protecting itself and is ready to invest in its future security. At the same time, it could also increase tensions with China, which often reacts strongly to such moves.

The issue is not just about military strength. It is also about balance. Taiwan must find a way to protect itself without increasing the risk of conflict. This requires careful planning, strong leadership, and cooperation with international partners.

The delay in passing the budget highlights the challenges of decision-making in a democratic system. Different views and debates are part of the process, but in matters of national security, timing can be very important.

As tensions in the region continue to grow, the pressure on Taiwan is increasing. The coming weeks may be crucial in deciding whether the defence plan moves forward.

This situation reflects a larger global reality, where security concerns are becoming more important in many regions. For Taiwan, the decision on its defence budget is not just about money—it is about safety, stability, and its place in an uncertain world.
