The United States has pledged $2 billion in humanitarian support to the United Nations, a move aimed at easing a severe global aid shortage caused by cuts from major donor countries. A U.S. State Department official confirmed the pledge on Monday, though no details were provided on how the funds will be allocated or if more contributions will follow.
In 2025, the Trump administration sharply reduced U.S. foreign aid spending. Leading European donors, including Germany, also scaled back assistance, prioritizing defense budgets instead. These cuts created a significant funding gap for the U.N., which relies heavily on contributions from wealthy nations to provide aid to vulnerable populations.
According to U.N. data, U.S. humanitarian contributions fell from $14.1 billion in 2024 to about $3.38 billion in 2025, making up just 14.8% of global aid. This decline marked a steep drop from the $17.2 billion peak in 2022. The reduction has strained the U.N.'s capacity to respond to emergencies and support millions of people in need.
Earlier this month, the United Nations launched its 2026 humanitarian appeal, requesting $23 billion to reach approximately 87 million people at risk. This target is nearly half of the $47 billion sought for 2025, reflecting both declining donor support and rising global needs. U.N. aid chief Tom Fletcher warned that the organization is overstretched and underfunded, forcing tough decisions to prioritize aid for those in the most urgent need.
The U.S. pledge is expected to provide relief to millions of people affected by conflicts, natural disasters, and extreme poverty around the world. It comes at a critical time as global humanitarian crises continue to rise, including food shortages, displacement, and health emergencies.
Experts say the funding will help stabilize emergency operations and support essential services such as food, medical care, and shelter. However, the U.N. and aid organizations stress that continued contributions from the U.S. and other nations are necessary to meet growing global challenges.
The pledge also signals the United States’ renewed commitment to international humanitarian support after the sharp reductions of the previous year. Analysts note that sustained funding will be crucial for the U.N. to maintain its ability to respond effectively to crises and prevent further human suffering.
The world continues to face increasing humanitarian needs, and contributions like the U.S. pledge are vital to ensuring that aid reaches the most vulnerable populations in time. Without such support, millions of people risk being left without food, shelter, and essential services in some of the world’s most fragile regions.
