Dubai: In a recent decision, the United Nations has ratified its core budget for the year 2026, amounting to $3.45 billion, as it contends with significant financial challenges and plans a notable reduction in its workforce. Following thorough discussions, the General Assembly approved an amount slightly exceeding Secretary-General António Guterres's initial proposal of $3.238 billion.
This budget primarily focuses on the UN's fundamental operations, deliberately excluding peacekeeping tasks and specific agencies such as UNESCO and the World Health Organization, which rely on independent funding sources. The sanctioned figure marks a decrease of around $270 million, or 7.25%, from the 2025 budget of $3.72 billion.
The Assembly has sanctioned funds to sustain vital actions in peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights, in line with the ongoing UN80 reform strategy aimed at refining administrative processes as the organisation approaches its 80th anniversary.
UN Controller Chandramouli Ramanathan shared with delegates that the Secretariat crafted the budget proposal in under six weeks, producing intricate documentation and addressing numerous queries from oversight entities and member nations. He underscored that achieving consensus on the budget underscores the strength of the UN’s financial planning.
Post-approval, Ramanathan warned that the greater challenge awaits during implementation, urging member states to ensure timely payments of their financial contributions to mitigate cash-flow dilemmas. The UN steps into 2026 with a tighter budget and plans to reduce its workforce by 19%, while still striving to fulfill its essential mission amidst challenging financial scenarios.
