UAE Champions Urban Development at UN-Habitat Meetings

Post by : Mara Rahim

In an impactful move on the world stage, the United Arab Emirates has continued to assert its influence as Mohammed Al Mansoori, Under-Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, led the UAE delegation to the third session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). Meeting at the organisation's Nairobi headquarters, international representatives convened to explore the future of urban development worldwide.

This event marks a pivotal point for the UAE, being its inaugural involvement in Executive Board activities after it was elected President of the UN-Habitat General Assembly and secured a place on the programme's Executive Board for 2025. This landmark achievement underscores the UAE's growing role and commitment to promoting sustainable urban development on the global terrain. Furthermore, it reflects the nation's increasing acknowledgment in domains like urban planning, innovation, and housing solutions.

During the discourse, Al Mansoori underlined that the UAE's presidency of UN-Habitat entails both immense responsibility and significant opportunity. He elucidated the UAE's vision of enhancing its contributions to the shaping of future global cities, especially in the context of accelerating population growth, climate change issues, and shifting societal needs. By embracing a leadership stance, the UAE aspires to galvanize international collaborations aimed at advancing urban planning, elevating living conditions, and creating resilient and smart urban environments.

Al Mansoori stressed the emirate's dedication to fostering innovative concepts and cutting-edge technologies to ensure that cities function more efficiently. The UAE plans to prioritize leveraging innovation to enhance housing infrastructure, transportation networks, and environmental stewardship. The overarching goal is to nurture urban landscapes that deliver superior quality of life and align with modern societal expectations.

He also reaffirmed that the nation will continue synchronizing its efforts with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on urbanization, community engagement, and climate action. The aim is to ensure that UAE’s contributions bolster the New Urban Agenda—an international strategy encouraging the development of safe, inclusive, and environmentally conscious cities globally.

Throughout discussions, the UAE delegation engaged with international partners and UN entities to explore avenues for enhanced collaboration. Al Mansoori mentioned that the UAE envisions leading and supporting initiatives that empower countries to craft improved urban strategies, address pressing global concerns effectively, and devise long-lasting solutions that nurture stable, future-focused communities.

Moreover, he noted that the UAE's leadership remains deeply invested in furthering UN-Habitat's objectives through the cultivation of new partnerships and the promotion of intelligent solutions that expand housing opportunities, mitigate environmental impact, and enhance social welfare. Drawing from its growing experience in infrastructure development and urban planning, the UAE aims to share its successful frameworks with other nations, contributing to a global paradigm where cities evolve into smarter and more sustainable entities for the future.

The UAE's robust involvement in these meetings underscores its aspirational vision of becoming a beacon of innovation and urban excellence worldwide. In a time when the globe seeks methods to construct cities that are adaptable, environmentally friendly, and technologically advanced, the UAE intends to play an integral role in shaping that future. This includes extending assistance to nations in need, sharing expertise, and collaborating with international partners to promote global advances towards future-ready cities.

Through its strategic role at UN-Habitat, the UAE reaffirms its commitment to fostering global partnerships, sustainable practices, and the development of urban spheres that cater to the aspirations of future generations. This significant involvement highlights the UAE's belief that creating vibrant cities is not merely a developmental aim but an investment in human prosperity, environmental sustainability, and global advancement.
