The United Arab Emirates and Japan convened for the third session of the Subcommittee on Political Diplomacy and International Cooperation under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI) in Tokyo. Co-chaired by Reem Ketait, Deputy Assistant Minister for Political Affairs at the UAE Foreign Ministry, and Iwamoto Keiichi, Director-General of the Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau at Japan’s Foreign Ministry, the meeting emphasized bilateral cooperation.

During discussions, both nations reaffirmed the robustness of UAE-Japan relations, stemming from mutual strategic interests, established diplomatic channels, and frequent high-level interactions. They underscored the significance of finalizing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to further economic collaboration and shared growth.

A variety of potential collaboration areas were explored, including economy, space initiatives, advanced technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital evolution. Both countries agreed to bolster cooperation in international forums to promote global peace, stability, and sustainable development.

The delegations shared insights on current regional and international affairs, particularly focusing on dynamics in the Middle East and Asia. They highlighted the necessity of dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful conflict resolutions, emphasizing the need for protecting civilians in warfare and ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid, particularly regarding the situations in Gaza and Sudan.

Both parties resolved to maintain regular consultations to support their shared aspirations and enhance the wellbeing of their nations. This initiative showcases the UAE’s dedication to cultivating active engagement in international peace and strengthening its bond with Japan.

Post-meeting, Reem Ketait engaged with Onishi Yohei, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, focusing on increasing cooperation through parliamentary avenues. Shihab Al Faheem, UAE Ambassador to Japan, alongside officials from pertinent UAE organizations, participated in the discussions.

This session represents a meaningful milestone in the UAE-Japan partnership, affirming intentions to explore fresh collaborations in trade, technology, and political alignment. Committing to sustainable growth and innovation, the nations aim to bolster regional stability and global cooperation.

The talks also emphasized the importance of advanced technologies, such as AI and digital evolution, in fostering economic advancement and strategic development. A mutual agreement to share knowledge, research, and best practices in these fields aims to enhance citizen welfare and create a secure, prosperous future.

The UAE-Japan CSPI subcommittee serves as a pivotal channel for dialogue, mutual understanding, and the progression of strategic partnerships. The Tokyo meeting reflects both nations’ dedication to close collaboration in crucial political, economic, and technological realms while tackling humanitarian and regional security issues.
