In the United States, buildings, ships, and government programs are usually named after leaders long after they leave office. But President Donald Trump is doing something very different. During his second term, Trump has placed his own name on many public institutions while still in power. This move has surprised supporters, critics, and historians alike.
Donald Trump is not new to branding. As a businessman, he put his name on hotels, golf courses, apartments, and even products like bottled water and steaks. Now, as president, he is using the same idea in government. His name is appearing on major national buildings, public programs, and even future military plans.
One of the most talked-about changes is the renaming of the famous Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. It is now called the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. The Kennedy Center was created in 1964 to honor President John F. Kennedy after his death. The decision to add Trump’s name was made by the center’s board, most of whom were appointed by Trump. This caused strong reactions, and some artists canceled shows in protest.
Another example is the U.S. Institute of Peace, a government-funded organization focused on preventing conflict around the world. In December, it was renamed the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. The administration said this was done because Trump helped push peace efforts in several regions. Critics argue that many conflicts are still ongoing and say the renaming is more about image than results.
Trump’s name is also moving into the military. He has announced plans for a new class of Navy warships called “Trump-class” battleships. These ships are still in the early design stage, and there is no guarantee they will ever be built. If they are completed, it would be the first time a sitting president’s name is used for a new class of warships.
Government programs are also being branded. A new savings plan for children, created by Congress, is now listed online as “Trump Accounts.” There is also a planned immigrant visa program called the “Trump Gold Card,” aimed at wealthy foreigners. In addition, a new government website for cheaper medicines is named TrumpRx.gov.
Supporters of the president say these actions show strong leadership. They believe Trump wants people to clearly see who is behind major government changes. The White House says the focus is not branding but results, such as lower drug prices, peace efforts, and economic growth.
However, critics see risks. They worry that putting a president’s name on public services makes it seem like the government belongs to one person, not the people. Historians note that past presidents usually waited until after their time in office to receive such honors. Some say these name changes may not last if a future government decides to reverse them.
Experts also question whether these moves will create a lasting legacy. Passing strong laws and policies often has a deeper impact than changing names. If political power shifts, many of these titles could be removed.
For now, Trump’s name is becoming part of America’s public space in a way never seen before. Whether this approach will be remembered as bold leadership or short-term branding will be decided by time, voters, and future leaders.
