Train Derails in Switzerland Alps After Avalanche, Five Injured

Post by : Saif Nasser

A passenger train in southern Switzerland derailed on Monday morning, February 16, 2026, after being struck by what authorities believe was an avalanche in the Alps. The accident occurred near the village of Goppenstein in the canton of Valais at around 7:00 a.m. local time. The train, carrying 29 passengers, was traveling on the line between Goppenstein and Hohtenn when it left the tracks. Officials said snow and debris from the avalanche may have fallen onto the railway just moments before the train passed.

The derailment caused injuries to five people, with one person taken to a hospital in Sion and four others treated at the scene. All other passengers were safely evacuated. Emergency responders, including helicopters, ambulances, fire teams, and mountain rescue units, quickly arrived to assist the injured and secure the area.

Authorities say the accident was caused by an avalanche, a sudden and powerful flow of snow down a mountainside. Heavy snowfall and strong winds in the region have increased the risk of avalanches, and local authorities had already issued warnings to the public. The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Valais has opened an official investigation to determine the exact cause of the derailment and whether proper safety protocols were followed.

Train services on the line between Goppenstein and Brig have been suspended while the tracks are cleared and safety inspections are carried out. Replacement buses were arranged to ensure passengers could continue their journeys.

This incident highlights the dangers posed by severe winter conditions in the Switzerland Alps. Avalanches can occur suddenly and move at high speed, posing serious risks to residents and travelers in mountain areas. Switzerland is known for its safe and reliable railway network, and this accident emphasizes the importance of monitoring mountain routes and implementing strong safety measures. Train travel in the Alps remains a vital part of life for locals, tourists, students, and workers, making safety a top priority for railway authorities and operators.
