Sydney: The tennis world turns its attention to the 2026 Australian Open, where prominent figures Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Aryna Sabalenka are ready to take center stage. The tournament action kicks off this Friday with the United Cup in Perth and Sydney, featuring top talents like women’s world No. 2 Iga Swiatek and men’s world No. 3 Alexander Zverev.
Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning world No. 1 and two-time champion at the Australian Open, is set to launch her season at the Brisbane International, scheduled from January 4-11. She faces stiff competition from 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys and world No. 4 Amanda Anisimova.
Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz and Italy’s Jannik Sinner, affectionately referred to as “Sincaraz” by fans, are slated for an exhibition match in South Korea on January 10, just eight days prior to the Grand Slam event.
Alcaraz, who clinched the ATP year-end No. 1 title following victories at the French Open and US Open last season, is eager to advance past the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, having faced defeat there against Novak Djokovic in 2025. Now 22 years old, he embarks on the new season with a fresh coaching perspective following his split with Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Sinner concluded a stellar 2025 by not only defending his Australian Open title but also by winning Wimbledon, all while overcoming a three-month doping suspension. With an impressive record of 58 wins to just six losses, he showcases remarkable resilience and skill on the tour.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, aged 38, will kick off his season at the Adelaide International on January 12. In pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam title and an 11th Australian Open victory, Djokovic acknowledges the increasing challenge from younger contenders like Alcaraz and Sinner.
Other prominent athletes participating in the United Cup include Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, and Alex de Minaur; while Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios will compete in Brisbane.
On the women’s side, Sabalenka is stepping into the new year with confidence, having secured the US Open title for a second time alongside wins in Brisbane, Madrid, and Miami. She stands as a top contender for her third Australian Open title, facing formidable opponents including Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina.
Reflecting on her achievements, Sabalenka stated, “Winning it twice instills confidence, but new challenges arise each year.” She is determined to further enhance her Grand Slam accolades.
Iga Swiatek, leading Poland at the United Cup alongside Hubert Hurkacz, aims for redemption after previous losses to Team USA last year and Germany in 2024. The US team, featuring Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz, is poised for strong performances. Additionally, Japan sees the long-awaited return of four-time major champion Naomi Osaka, participating for the first time.
The upcoming 2026 Australian Open promises to feature intense competition as these champions and emerging talents vie for supremacy in the world of tennis.
