Tianshan Shengli Tunnel: A Key Development for Xinjiang

Tianshan Shengli Tunnel: A Key Development for Xinjiang

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

China's recent inauguration of the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, the longest expressway tunnel globally, represents a significant advancement in infrastructure for northwest China. Spanning 22.13 kilometers, this tunnel navigates through the formidable Tianshan Mountains, greatly improving travel through a previously difficult region.

Situated within the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the tunnel cuts down a multi-hour mountainous journey to a mere 20 minutes, as reported by state media. It opened concurrently with the G0711 Urumqi–Yuli Expressway, a crucial north-south transport route.

The expressway extends 324.7 kilometers and has been constructed over five years at a cost of 46.7 billion yuan (approximately $6.63 billion). It serves as an essential transport connection for city clusters located in the northern and southern parts of Xinjiang, traditionally divided by the rugged Tianshan range.

The Tianshan Mountains stretch nearly 2,500 kilometers across central Xinjiang, acting as a natural barrier between Urumqi, the largest city in the north, and Korla, the largest city in the south. With this expressway now operational, the travel duration between these cities has been reduced from around seven hours to approximately three hours.

In addition to improving regional mobility, the route bolsters Xinjiang’s position as a strategic transport hub. It links to various critical economic areas via existing expressway networks, including the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region, the Yangtze River Delta, the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, and the Chengdu–Chongqing area, thus serving as an essential connector between China's eastern economic centers and Eurasian countries.

Authorities predict that this project will foster greater economic collaboration between the northern and southern areas of Xinjiang, enhance logistics and tourism, and create new avenues for trade and engagement with the outside world, further incorporating the region into broader national and international transport frameworks.
