New car sales of Tesla in Spain fell sharply in December, raising questions about the company’s position in one of Europe’s growing electric vehicle markets. According to industry data released on Friday, Tesla sold far fewer cars compared to the same period last year, even as demand for electric and hybrid vehicles continued to rise across the country.
Figures from Spain’s auto industry group ANFAC show that Tesla registered 1,794 vehicles in December. This marks a steep drop of 44.2 percent compared to December 2024. The decline stands out because Spain’s broader market for electrified vehicles is expanding rapidly.
Looking at the full year, Tesla’s performance in Spain also weakened. In 2025, the company’s total sales were down 4 percent compared to 2024. This happened during a year when interest in cleaner and greener vehicles increased strongly. Sales of electrified vehicles, which include fully electric cars and hybrids, jumped by nearly 95 percent over the same period.
The data suggests that while Spanish buyers are clearly moving toward electric mobility, Tesla is facing stronger competition. Traditional carmakers and new brands are offering more electric and hybrid models, often at lower prices or with features tailored to local needs. This wider choice may be drawing customers away from Tesla.
Price sensitivity is another possible factor. Inflation and high living costs across Europe have made buyers more cautious. Some consumers may prefer hybrid vehicles, which are often cheaper and easier to use where charging stations are limited. Others may be waiting for new models or better incentives before making a purchase.
Spain has been pushing hard to support electric vehicles through subsidies, charging infrastructure, and environmental rules. These efforts are helping the overall market grow, but they also mean carmakers must adapt quickly to changing consumer expectations.
Tesla remains one of the most well-known electric car brands in the world. However, the latest figures from Spain show that brand strength alone may not be enough. As the electric vehicle market becomes more crowded, success will depend on pricing, product range, and how well companies respond to local demand.
The coming months will show whether Tesla can recover its momentum in Spain or if rivals will continue to gain ground in one of Europe’s fastest-growing electric car markets.
