Taiwan Deputy Foreign Minister Visits Israel for Defense Talks

Post by : Mina Rahman

Taiwan’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Francois Wu, recently made a previously undisclosed visit to Israel, signaling the island’s growing focus on defense cooperation with the Middle Eastern country.

While Taiwan maintains limited formal diplomatic ties due to pressure from Beijing, it views Israel as a key democratic partner. Relations between the two countries have strengthened since Taiwan voiced strong support for Israel following the October 2023 Hamas attacks and the conflict in Gaza.

Details of Wu’s meetings remain confidential, including whether discussions touched on Taiwan’s newly unveiled T-Dome multi-layered air defense system, which draws inspiration from Israel’s renowned Iron Dome. Taiwan emphasized that cooperation with Israel will continue in areas such as trade, technology, and culture, grounded in shared democratic values.

Wu, who previously served as Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to France, is one of the island’s most prominent international representatives. His visit comes as Taiwan seeks to strengthen defense capabilities in light of regional security challenges, particularly concerning potential threats from China.

The T-Dome system is designed to integrate existing defense assets, including U.S.-made Patriot missiles and locally developed Sky Bow systems, to create an advanced “sensor-to-shooter” mechanism. While it shares some similarities with Israel’s layered defense system, T-Dome is tailored to Taiwan’s specific strategic needs.

High-level exchanges between Taiwan and Israel have increased in recent months. President Lai Ching-te has met with Israeli lawmakers, while Taiwan continues to host Israeli officials, reflecting growing bilateral engagement despite Taiwan’s limited diplomatic footprint in the Middle East.

Past incidents, such as the use of Taiwanese technology in Israeli operations in Lebanon, have not affected the overall trajectory of cooperation, which continues to expand in defense, technology, and strategic dialogue.
