Taiwan Rescuers Battle Thick Mud to Search for Missing After Super Typhoon Ragasa

On September 26, 2025, rescue teams in Taiwan continued their search for 11 individuals still missing after Super Typhoon Ragasa unleashed devastating floods in the eastern county of Hualien. The typhoon's heavy rains caused a barrier lake in the mountains to overflow, sending a torrent of water and mud into the town of Guangfu.

Ongoing Search and Rescue Operations

Despite the receding floodwaters, thick, dark grey mud continues to blanket large parts of the area, complicating rescue efforts. Rescue workers, some wading through mud up to their waists, have been cutting holes in the roofs of buildings to search for missing persons. The death toll from the disaster remains at 14, with the number of missing individuals reduced from 33 to 11.

Impact on Local Communities

The flooding has left many residents stranded and in urgent need of assistance. Local authorities and rescue teams are working tirelessly to provide aid and locate the missing individuals. The disaster has also raised concerns about the effectiveness of early warning systems and the preparedness of local infrastructure to handle such extreme weather events.

Looking Ahead

As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on finding the remaining missing persons and providing support to affected communities. The disaster has highlighted the vulnerability of rural areas to extreme weather events and the need for improved disaster preparedness and response strategies.
