Al-Jouf Recognized as a Vital Destination for Avian Migration

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Saudi Arabia's diverse ecosystems are providing rich avenues for wildlife photographers to capture the beauty of bird migration and local habitats.

Nader Al-Shammari, a passionate photographer since 2011, focuses his efforts in Al-Jouf Region, but has also ventured into birdwatching in the Aseer Region and beyond the country's borders.

He has documented an impressive count of more than 230 bird species specifically within Al-Jouf, a notable figure against the backdrop of 507 species recorded across Saudi Arabia.

Al-Shammari noted that the region's distinctive environment plays a crucial role in avian migration. The combination of varying terrains—mountains, deserts, inland water, and agricultural lands, alongside a welcoming climate—acts as a magnet for migrating birds.

Numerous migratory species spend considerable time in Al-Jouf, and through his lens, Al-Shammari has been able to capture both transient visitors and resident birds.

Recent monitoring has also unearthed a range of rare and notable species in Al-Jouf, such as the wood pigeon and the greater hoopoe lark, underscoring the region's ecological significance.

As a result, Al-Jouf is increasingly recognized as an essential site for birdwatching and wildlife photography enthusiasts in Saudi Arabia.
