Congress Extends Support to Vijay's TVK Government Initiative

Post by : Shakul

In a significant political maneuver, Vijay has garnered crucial backing from the Indian National Congress as negotiations unfold for the formation of the new government in Tamil Nadu, following the recent assembly elections. The Congress party has confirmed its readiness to support Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), but with a pivotal stipulation.

As outlined by party officials, Congress insists that the alliance must exclude what they categorize as “communal elements” that lack faith in the Constitution of India. This declaration was made by Girish Chodankar, who oversees the All India Congress Committee's affairs in Tamil Nadu, after talks involving the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee alongside the Congress Legislative Party.

With Congress's support, Vijay’s standing in the Tamil Nadu Assembly improves, accumulating five additional MLAs to his count. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam secured 107 seats in the assembly's total of 234, marking it as the largest party. This support elevates the tally to 112 seats, yet Vijay remains six seats shy of the requisite 118 for forming a government.

Sources within political circles indicate that Vijay is also engaging with other regional and Left entities, including Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, the Communist Party of India, and the Communist Party of India Marxist. Should these parties align with TVK, it could propel the alliance past the majority threshold, potentially enabling Vijay to assume the role of Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister.

These latest political shifts have ignited considerable excitement throughout Chennai and beyond. Vijay’s impactful entry into the political arena and his commendable electoral results are reshaping Tamil Nadu's political scene, challenging the longstanding dominance of the two principal Dravidian parties.

The Congress's announcement further highlighted that the collaboration with TVK is anchored in mutual respect, secular principles, and a shared political objective. Party leaders conveyed that this partnership aims not only at government formation but also at collaboration in upcoming local elections, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha contests.

Simultaneously, reports surfaced indicating that certain TVK leaders had a meeting with Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the leader of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, in Chennai. This gathering has sparked speculation regarding potential political realignments and internal shifts within the state's existing political alliances.

Additionally, the Congress statement mentioned Vijay and Rahul Gandhi, affirming both leaders’ commitment to honoring the electoral mandate from Tamil Nadu’s populace, while striving towards a progressive and secular governance focused on youth empowerment and public welfare.

In the recently held elections, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam astonished observers by clinching 108 seats, emerging as the assembly's premier party. The reigning Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured a meager 59 seats, while All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam captured 47. Notably, Vijay triumphed in both of the constituencies he contested, and he is anticipated to retain his Perambur seat while ceding Trichy East, potentially leading to a by-election in the near future.
