For over two years, the city of Khartoum—the capital of Sudan—has been scarred by one of the most brutal conflicts in recent history. The violent clashes between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have left tens of thousands dead, with many bodies abandoned on the streets, buried hastily, or lost altogether. In the midst of this devastation, however, a quiet yet powerful movement has taken root: volunteers, led by organizations such as the Sudanese Red Crescent, are stepping in to ensure that those who have perished receive proper, dignified burials in line with their cultural and religious traditions.
An Unseen Humanitarian Effort in Harrowing Times
The violence that erupted in April 2023 has left Khartoum’s streets littered with the dead—people found inside buildings, on roadways, and in disputed territories where regular government services no longer function. Hospitals and official bodies are overwhelmed or unable to retrieve bodies due to ongoing hostilities. This harsh reality prompted local volunteers to act, forming teams equipped with courage and a sense of duty to collect and bury the dead respectfully.
These volunteers, many affiliated with the Sudanese Red Crescent, don special protective gear to safely handle remains. They carefully wrap bodies and transport them to more secure burial sites, often developing detailed records to aid in the identification of the deceased. The challenge of identification is immense; many bodies lack any documentation, and some have remained undiscovered for months—or even since the onset of the conflict.
The Scale of the Tragedy
Since the outbreak of war, more than 61,000 deaths have been recorded in Khartoum alone, a drastic increase from pre-conflict mortality rates. Of these, approximately 26,000 deaths are directly attributed to violence. Entire neighborhoods have been destroyed, and many families are frantically searching for missing loved ones amidst the chaos. The volunteers not only aid in burial efforts but also work to track missing persons, providing a fragile link of hope for those left behind.
Overcoming Danger and Scarcity
The environment in which these volunteers operate remains perilous. Despite the steady recapture of parts of the city by Sudan’s army in recent months, sporadic clashes and the threat of air raids continue. Volunteers risk their lives collecting remains under constant threat. Moreover, resources are scarce, and organizations face critical funding shortages, limiting their capacity to respond to the growing humanitarian needs.
Cultural and Religious Imperatives
In Sudanese society, proper and timely burial of the dead is a fundamental religious and cultural practice. Islamic traditions, which are prevalent in Sudan, emphasize respect for the deceased and swift funeral rites after death. The volunteers’ efforts are more than just practical—they restore a measure of dignity amidst the senseless destruction and give families some semblance of closure.
The Road to Recovery and Rebuilding
While the immediate focus remains on human remains and burials, other aspects of Khartoum’s recovery are quietly progressing. Local communities and civil society organizations are partnering to restore essential services like healthcare, water, and electricity, despite the heavy toll on infrastructure. The resilience of the people shines through, even as the city bears the scars of an unforgiving war.
More than two million displaced people are expected to return to Khartoum in the coming months, hoping to rebuild their lives. Yet, safety is uncertain, and the wounds—both physical and emotional—will take years to heal.
The Global Context and Call for Action
Sudan’s conflict, described as a “forgotten war,” has drawn limited international attention despite its catastrophic humanitarian consequences. Human rights groups and international bodies have repeatedly called for global cooperation to protect civilians, ensure aid reaches those in need, and hold perpetrators accountable for war crimes occurring in the region. Still, on the ground, it is the bravery and dedication of local volunteers who are filling critical gaps.
Personal Stories of Bravery and Loss
Accounts from within Khartoum reveal harrowing stories of loss and resilience. Residents who endured months under paramilitary control describe constant fear, deprivation, and abuses. As the city changed hands, violence did not abate; extrajudicial killings, looting, and targeting of civilians persisted. Through it all, volunteers have been the silent caretakers, providing humanitarian aid and burial services under the most difficult conditions.
