South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has confirmed that he asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to play a role in mediating efforts to engage North Korea in dialogue. The announcement came during Lee’s state visit to China, as he highlighted progress in restoring trust between Seoul and Beijing.
During their talks, President Lee shared the steps South Korea has taken to open communication with North Korea, although these efforts have not yet yielded results. He emphasized the need for patience and cooperation, and requested China’s assistance in encouraging North Korea to participate in talks that could promote peace on the Korean peninsula.
“President Xi acknowledged our efforts so far and said patience is needed,” Lee told South Korean media while in Shanghai. He also quoted Xi as saying, “Talk is easy, but action is not so easy,” underscoring the complexity of international diplomacy.
The meeting marked the second time in less than three months that Lee and Xi have met, reflecting South Korea’s push to open a “new phase” in relations with China. The countries’ ties had been strained in recent years, partly due to a 2017 dispute over a U.S. missile defense system deployment in South Korea, which led to restrictions on South Korean cultural exports in China.
President Lee highlighted the importance of building trust and respect between countries while balancing key national interests. He also noted his hope that tensions between China and Japan could be resolved, and reaffirmed that South Korea values its relationship with Japan as much as its ties with China.
Experts say that China’s role could be crucial in North Korea diplomacy, as Beijing has long been Pyongyang’s main ally and economic partner. By seeking Xi’s help, Seoul aims to leverage China’s influence to encourage North Korea to engage in talks on denuclearization and regional stability.
South Korea’s efforts signal a broader strategy to maintain peace on the peninsula while strengthening regional cooperation with key neighbors. Analysts also note that fostering closer ties with China could help South Korea navigate complex security challenges in Northeast Asia.
As talks continue, the world will be watching whether China can successfully help mediate between Seoul and Pyongyang, potentially creating a pathway to lasting peace and stability in the region.
