His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, presided over the Board of Trustees meeting of the Sharjah Maritime Academy (SMA) at its Khorfakkan headquarters, reaffirming the emirate's strategic commitment to advancing maritime education.
The Ruler commended the Academy for meeting international benchmarks in maritime training and education, noting its emergence alongside leading global institutions. He praised the Board, faculty, staff and students for their collective dedication, integrity and sustained efforts that have driven the institution’s achievements.
His Highness highlighted SMA’s steady annual progress and said he closely follows Khorfakkan’s development across multiple sectors, with education singled out for strong academic outcomes and disciplined student conduct. He attributed the Academy’s rise to a supportive campus environment and students’ serious pursuit of knowledge.
Board members examined several agenda items during the session, including academic advancement, partnerships with overseas institutions, and financial matters. The trustees endorsed the Academy’s budget for the 2025–2026 academic year and adopted updated regulations for postgraduate programmes in maritime specialisations, strengthening Sharjah’s higher-education strategy in the maritime domain.
Dr Hashim Abdullah bin Sarhan Al Zaabi, Chancellor of Sharjah Maritime Academy, delivered a comprehensive briefing on SMA’s academic and research milestones, international accreditations and strategic plans for future expansion. The Board also assessed collaborative initiatives with prominent maritime universities to raise training and research standards.
The meeting included senior Sharjah dignitaries and education officials such as Sheikh Khaled bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, Dr Mansour bin Nassar and Dr Aisha Mohammed Bukhatir Al Shamsi, who participated in discussions aimed at reinforcing the maritime education framework and supporting the UAE’s ambition to develop a world-class maritime academic hub.
