The Gaza Strip faced intense winter storms this weekend, inundating tent camps and leaving many families, displaced by ongoing conflict, scrambling to stay dry. Numerous shelters, weakened by prolonged use and war damage, collapsed under the heavy rains.
In Khan Younis, children navigated flooded paths as families utilized shovels, cans, and their hands to bail water from their tents. Residents reported soaked bedding, muddy shelters, and overpowering odors. “Our tent was swept away. We are lost with nowhere to go,” lamented Majdoleen Tarabein, who was displaced from Rafah.
The brutal winter has already claimed at least 12 lives, including that of a two-week-old infant, due to hypothermia and structural collapses. Gaza’s Health Ministry has cautioned residents to steer clear of damaged buildings, yet significant areas remain in ruins. According to a UN estimate from July, nearly 80% of Gaza’s structures have been destroyed or compromised.
Since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas began on October 10, Gaza has seen 414 fatalities and 1,142 injuries. Overall, the conflict has led to at least 71,266 Palestinian deaths.
Aid Needs Escalate Amid Limited Resources
The flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza has not met the escalating needs. Israeli military statistics indicate that 4,200 trucks delivered supplies last week, including tents, winter clothing, and sanitation assistance; however, aid organizations assert that these figures fall short.
Since the ceasefire commenced, 72,000 tents and 403,000 tarpaulins have reportedly been distributed, according to the Shelter Cluster. Philippe Lazzarini, the UN commissioner-general overseeing the aid operation in Gaza, remarked on social media, “People in Gaza are enduring life in flimsy, waterlogged tents amidst destruction. Aid supplies are not arriving at the necessary scale.”
Stagnation in Ceasefire Progress
Advancements on the ceasefire front have stalled. Israel has stated that it won’t proceed to the next phase until all remaining hostages are recovered, while Hamas claims that the devastation in Gaza complicates recovery efforts.
The primary challenges in the next ceasefire phase include deploying an international stabilization force, establishing a technocratic government, disarming Hamas militants, and further withdrawal of Israeli troops. Both factions have accused one another of ceasefire violations, leaving the region in an unstable situation.
