Devastating rainstorms have impacted vast regions of California, resulting in severe flooding and mudslides that have tragically claimed at least three lives as reported by authorities on Christmas night.
The intense storm system, which is anticipated to continue through Friday, delivered up to 11 inches of rain in certain areas of Los Angeles County. The resulting downpours led to evacuations, submerged roads, and significant highway closures. Emergency teams were engaged in numerous rescue operations, assisting individuals trapped in vehicles as floodwaters surged rapidly.
In response to the escalating crisis, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a state of emergency on Wednesday, affecting Los Angeles and various adjacent counties. By Thursday night, nearly 100,000 residents throughout the state were left without power.
Weather officials have cautioned that the threat is ongoing. According to the US Weather Prediction Center, numerous flash flooding incidents remain likely, with the potential for rivers and streams to overflow due to rising water levels.
Reports confirmed that a 64-year-old man in San Diego succumbed to injuries after being struck by a falling tree during the storm early Wednesday. In northern California, a 74-year-old man's life was claimed when floodwaters engulfed his vehicle in Redding as police attempted a rescue. Additionally, a woman in her 70s was swept into the ocean by a powerful wave along the Mendocino County coast earlier in the week.
Evacuation notices were activated in parts of San Bernardino County, while flash flood warnings were issued for segments of the San Francisco Bay Area. Strong winds have also rocked the area, with gusts exceeding 100 miles per hour near San Jose.
Flooding in Los Angeles areas, including Altadena, has triggered mudslides in regions previously scorched by wildfires, where the damaged land found it difficult to cope with the heavy rainfall. City officials have cautioned residents to exercise caution, especially during this busy holiday travel period.
In a local emergency declaration, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass urged residents to limit travel, highlighting the serious risks posed by the storm.
Meteorologists state that the severe weather conditions are driven by multiple atmospheric rivers, which are pulling substantial moisture from tropical regions and exacerbating rainfall during one of the year’s busiest travel weeks.
