Tragic Capsizing Near Gambia Leaves Seven Dead

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Tragedy struck off the coast of The Gambia as at least seven individuals have perished, with many others still unaccounted for following the capsizing of a vessel carrying approximately 200 migrants. This incident took place near Jinack village in the North Bank Region around midnight on Wednesday, as reported by the Gambian Defence Ministry.

Authorities revealed that the capsized boat was later found stranded on a sandbank. To date, 96 passengers have been rescued, while search-and-rescue efforts continue to find those missing. The ill-fated journey was aimed at reaching Spain’s Canary Islands, a treacherous route across the Atlantic often taken by African migrants seeking access to Europe.

The rescue operation, led by the Gambian Navy, utilized multiple naval ships alongside support from local fishing vessels. Although the specific type of vessel has not been disclosed, similar boats are generally large wooden canoes, often overcrowded and ill-equipped for such lengthy ocean voyages exceeding 1,500 kilometers (900 miles).

Of those rescued, ten are reported to be in critical condition and are receiving immediate medical attention. The identities of some victims remain unconfirmed, particularly those who are not Gambian nationals.

The Gambia has increasingly become a key departure point for West African migrants attempting to reach Europe via the Canary Islands. Recent agreements between the European Union and North African nations have tightened migration routes, forcing more individuals to undertake the dangerous Atlantic crossing.

In 2024 alone, nearly 47,000 migrants reached the Canary Islands, with humanitarian organizations estimating that over 9,000 have died trying to make this perilous journey in recent years.
