Russia Expands Drone Production, Raising Fears of Prolonged Ukraine War

Post by : Mina Rahman

The war between Russia and Ukraine appears far from ending. Instead of showing interest in peace talks, Russia is preparing for a stronger and longer fight. This warning has come from Ukraine’s top military commander, who says Moscow is rapidly increasing its production of drones and other weapons.

Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, has revealed that Russia is planning a major expansion in drone manufacturing. According to him, Russia is currently producing more than 400 attack drones every day. These are mainly Shahed-type drones, originally designed in Iran. Russia now aims to raise this number to as many as 1,000 drones per day.

This plan is worrying for Ukraine. Drones have become one of Russia’s most powerful tools in the war. They are cheaper than missiles, easier to produce in large numbers, and are often used to attack cities, power stations, and military bases. Large drone swarms can overwhelm air defenses and cause serious damage, even if many are shot down.

General Syrskyi said Russia is not slowing down its attacks. Instead, Ukrainian forces are seeing more fighting on the front lines, more Russian assault units, and a steady increase in missile and drone strikes. In his view, this clearly shows that Russia is not ready to discuss a real peace deal.

Ukraine’s response, he said, must be firm. The country needs to stop Russia’s plans by hitting key military and industrial targets and by making the war costly for Moscow. Syrskyi stressed that peace negotiations only become possible when both sides feel pressure. A weak position, he warned, leads to unfair deals.

One area where Ukraine believes it has gained strength is long-range strikes. Ukrainian drones and missiles have been used to hit targets deep inside Russian territory. These attacks have focused mainly on oil refineries, fuel storage sites, and transport hubs. Syrskyi said Ukrainian forces have struck more than 700 such targets, causing damage worth around $15 billion. These strikes are meant to weaken Russia’s economy and reduce its ability to fund the war.

At the same time, Ukraine is building its own drone industry at a fast pace. Since Russia launched its full invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has developed new drones for surveillance, attacks, and air defense. Military leaders now say interceptor drones are one of the best ways to stop Russian drone attacks. They are cheaper and more effective than using expensive air defense missiles.

On the battlefield, the situation remains tense. Russian forces currently control about 20% of Ukrainian territory. They continue to advance slowly in eastern Ukraine, often capturing small villages after heavy fighting. These gains come at a high cost in soldiers and equipment, but they allow Russia to keep pressure on Ukrainian defenses.

Russia also has an advantage in manpower due to its larger population. However, Syrskyi said Ukraine has made progress in its own mobilisation efforts. Recruitment centers are working better, training has improved, and more attention is being given to the treatment of new soldiers. He said many problems in the past came from poor communication and lack of respect toward those being mobilized.

There is some positive news for Ukraine. Syrskyi said Ukrainian military losses in 2025 were about 13% lower than the year before. At the same time, Russian losses have increased. This suggests that Ukraine’s defensive tactics and use of drones are having an impact.

Even so, the overall message is serious. Russia’s push to massively increase drone production shows clear preparation for a long war. Technology, factory output, and endurance are becoming just as important as soldiers on the front lines.

As the conflict enters another year, hopes for peace remain distant. For now, both sides appear focused not on negotiations, but on strengthening their ability to fight on.
