In a significant development for the UK's renewable energy landscape, Masdar and ScottishPower have successfully installed the inaugural turbine at the East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm. This groundbreaking project has achieved a record-breaking feat by employing 115-metre-long blades, the longest ever utilized in British waters, surpassing the length of a Premier League football field.
Comprising a total of 95 turbines, all 285 blades are being fabricated locally at the Siemens Gamesa facility in Hull, bolstering local industries and providing employment opportunities.
Each turbine reaches an impressive height of around 262 metres, taller than The Shard’s observation deck. These state-of-the-art 14MW turbines have a rotor diameter of 236 metres, allowing them to generate substantial electricity.
The energy produced from a single rotation can sufficiently power a UK household for over four days, with the additional capacity to charge approximately 1,700 mobile devices or brew nearly 1,000 cups of tea.
According to Charlie Jordan, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables, this moment marks a pivotal achievement for the initiative, reiterating its vital role in advancing clean energy. He emphasized that East Anglia THREE will stand out as their largest and most powerful wind farm, injecting billions into the economy, generating numerous construction jobs, and establishing over 100 permanent positions in East England.
Situated off the Suffolk coastline, the wind farm is anticipated to provide clean power to around 1.3 million UK homes when fully operational, thereby enhancing the nation’s energy security and decreasing dependence on fossil fuels.
Husain Al Meer, Masdar’s Director of Global Offshore Wind, characterized the initiative as a monumental advancement for the UK's offshore wind industry. He stressed the significance of international partnerships in reaching clean energy objectives and fostering enduring economic growth.
The installation is being conducted by Cadeler using its Wind Osprey jack-up vessel, with an additional advanced vessel, Wind Pace, slated to facilitate quicker and more efficient installations.
The 115-metre blades represent a substantial increase over the prior UK record of 108 metres, also established by Siemens Gamesa. The Hull factory employs over 1,400 individuals and continues to prioritize future workforce development.
Once completed, East Anglia THREE is positioned to rank among the largest offshore wind farms globally, serving a crucial function in the UK's pivot towards sustainable and reliable energy solutions.
