India’s leading batsman Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati because of a lingering neck injury. The match is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, and with Gill sidelined, Rishabh Pant will take charge as captain, having previously stepped in during the Kolkata Test after Gill’s early exit.
Gill traveled to Guwahati on November 19 following observation in a Kolkata hospital. However, the BCCI confirmed on Friday that he would not participate in the upcoming match, with plans for him to return to Mumbai for further evaluation. Medical experts have cautioned that returning too soon may provoke additional neck spasms, leading to recommendations for further rest.
This situation also raises concerns about Gill's availability for the ODI series commencing against South Africa on November 30. The announcement for the ODI squad is projected for November 23. India’s management will need to choose an appropriate replacement from B Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, or Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Gill’s injury originated during the Kolkata Test, where he managed only three deliveries in his first innings before retiring hurt. By the morning of the third day, the BCCI publicized that he would not continue in the match. India ultimately lost that Test by 30 runs after being bowled out for 93 while chasing 124 on a challenging pitch. This incident is not Gill’s first neck issue, as he previously missed a Test against New Zealand in October 2024 due to a similar problem.
Before heading to Guwahati, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak stressed that the team would not jeopardize Gill’s health. “He is making a good recovery. The final call will be made by the physios and doctors tomorrow evening. Even with full recovery, we cannot risk further spasms during play,” Kotak stated.
Gill’s absence is a major setback for India’s batting lineup. Renowned for his dependable performances in both Test and limited-overs formats, he has been an integral part of the team. With the second Test looming, the management must quickly decide on an optimal replacement to maintain squad balance.
Rishabh Pant, who led the team in Kolkata post-Gill’s departure, will assume complete leadership duties in Guwahati. His guidance will be vital as the team faces a robust South African side. The Indian squad must also adeptly reorganize the batting lineup to offset the loss of Gill’s experience and stability at the top of the order.
Both fans and cricket analysts are eagerly monitoring the developments surrounding Gill, recognizing that his recovery and potential participation in the ODI series will be critical for India’s performance against South Africa in forthcoming matches.
