The Houston Texans clinched a dramatic 23-19 victory against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night, driven by a formidable defense and strategic scoring. Quarterback Davis Mills connected on two touchdown passes, while Caden Bullock delivered pivotal moments, including two interceptions and a forced fumble. The Texan defense shone with eight sacks, continually pressuring Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
Allen successfully completed 24 of 34 passes, amassing 253 yards, but was hampered by two interceptions that contributed to Buffalo's second loss within a short span. Running back James Cook made a notable impact, rushing for 116 yards and a touchdown over 17 carries. Wide receiver Khalil Shakir stood out with eight receptions for 110 yards, and Ray Davis’s kickoff return for a touchdown kept the Bills competitive.
Mills, managing his third consecutive start in place of C.J. Stroud—who is recovering from a concussion—completed 16 of 30 passes for 153 yards. Key touchdown receptions came from Christian Kirk and Jayden Higgins, which helped the Texans (6-5) secure their fourth win in five outings.
As the game reached its climax, Buffalo found themselves facing a fourth-and-27 from their own 30-yard line but completed an 11-yard pass from Allen to Joshua Palmer. Palmer lateraled to Shakir for an additional 33 yards, advancing the ball to Houston’s 26 with just 41 seconds on the clock. In a critical moment, as the Bills faced fourth-and-6 from the Houston 22-yard line, Allen's pass was intercepted by Bullock, clinching the Texans' win.
The game opened with Buffalo taking an initial lead, with Cook rushing 45 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter although Matt Prater missed the extra point attempt. Both teams traded field goals in the second quarter, culminating in Mills’ 2-yard touchdown pass to Kirk, placing Houston ahead 10-9. Bullock's early interception of Allen set the stage for a 43-yard field goal by Ka’imi Fairbairn.
Buffalo countered swiftly, with Ray Davis executing a kickoff return for 97 yards, propelling the Bills ahead 16-13 at halftime. The Texans regained momentum in the third quarter with Fairbairn's 26-yard field goal, bringing the score to 23-16. Although Prater narrowed the gap with a 38-yard kick, Houston's formidable defense prevailed in the final moments to secure their victory.
Key defensive contributions included Will Anderson with 2 ½ sacks and Danielle Hunter with two additional sacks, consistently applying pressure on Allen, who faced a total loss of 70 yards. This blend of defensive resilience and pivotal offensive plays from Mills empowered Houston to foil the Bills’ late-game efforts.
The Texans’ win underscores their growing confidence and determination as they seek to maintain momentum this NFL season. Bullock's interceptions and the team’s impressive eight sacks played a vital role in dismantling Buffalo's offensive strategies, swaying the game in favor of Houston.
With this win, Houston bolsters their record to 6-5, keeping their postseason aspirations alive, while the Bills drop to 7-4, needing to regroup promptly ahead of their upcoming matches.
