Country music icon Dolly Parton, aged 79, has opened up about her health following her absence from a pivotal event in her career—her induction into the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Hall of Fame. The event recently unfolded in Orlando, Florida, marking a significant chapter in Parton’s journey and the legacy of her cherished Dollywood theme park.
In a heartfelt video shared on social media, Parton took a moment to address her fans directly, shedding light on her absence: “Hello, it’s Dolly. I truly wish I could be there with all of you today, but I’ve faced some health issues this fall, and my doctors advised me to prioritize rest for a bit,” she revealed. Despite not being present, she conveyed immense gratitude for the honor and acknowledged the vital contributions of her long-standing partners, Jack and Peter Herschend, to the success of Dollywood.
Reflecting on over four decades of partnership, Parton expressed her admiration: “You’ve been a treasure in my life, and I care for you dearly. Our partnership means the world to me. I have confidence in them, and they listen attentively whenever I present my big ideas and dreams.” She also credited her Dollywood team for transforming her visions into reality, from the park’s initial concept to its ongoing triumph.
She reminisced about the park’s opening in 1986, recalling her mix of nerves and excitement: “I felt as anxious as a kid wondering if anyone would show up for a birthday party. I peeked out the window of my bus and saw all the cars lined up—can you believe they’re still showing up today?” Her reflections highlight her lifelong commitment to crafting an environment where families can share joy, fun, and unforgettable memories.
Being inducted into the IAAPA Hall of Fame is a significant accomplishment, not only for Parton personally but also historically, as she is only the second woman to receive the honor independently and the fourth woman in the organization’s hundred-year history. This recognition coincides with the 40th anniversary of Dollywood, adding special significance for Parton and her team.
This year has seen Parton face various health challenges, prompting her to postpone her first Las Vegas residency in over thirty years. She reassured her audience, stating that her condition is manageable and “nothing major,” despite undergoing treatments near her home in Tennessee. Candidly, she acknowledged that after years dedicated to caring for her late husband Carl and prioritizing others, she had overlooked her own health: “I have some issues, as I’ve mentioned, but I want you to know I’m not on my deathbed,” she affirmed.
Earlier this month, Parton also accepted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, delivering a heartfelt message about gratitude and altruism. Growing up in a family of 12, she reflected on the lessons of sharing and assisting others: “The more you give, the more blessings come to you,” she stated while holding her honorary Oscar and expressing her sincere gratitude for the accolade.
Despite these health obstacles, Parton continues to uplift millions globally through her resilience, kindness, and steadfast commitment to her aspirations. Her narrative not only showcases her artistic legacy but also emphasizes her devotion to family, community, and creating opportunities for others.
