The national football squad of Iraq is diligently preparing for the World Cup playoffs after being matched with the victor of the contest between Bolivia and Suriname. The Asian football powerhouses clinched their playoff berth by overcoming the United Arab Emirates with a 3-2 aggregate score, following a 2-1 triumph in Basra on Tuesday.
Graham Arnold, who took over as head coach from Jesus Casas in June, highlighted the necessity of maintaining a positive outlook as Iraq gears up for these critical matches. He stated, “We need to stay positive and ensure we are ready for this game.” Arnold underscored that off-field preparations would be crucial, particularly as the playoffs are set to be held in Mexico, a venue that poses challenges for the team.
Iraq’s World Cup history harkens back to 1986, marking their sole appearance in the finals hosted in Mexico. This connection serves as added motivation for the players and coaching staff, who aim to secure a place on football's grandest stage once more.
Bolivia, having placed seventh in the South American qualifiers, will face Suriname to see who will meet Iraq in the playoff clash. Although FIFA has yet to confirm exact dates and venues for these matches, both teams are already in preparation mode. Arnold stressed that understanding their opponents and navigating the unique circumstances of playing in Mexico will be vital for Iraq's success.
Arnold brings considerable playoff experience, having led Australia to the 2022 World Cup through decisive victories over the UAE and Peru. His familiarity with managing high-pressure situations is expected to be an asset for Iraq as they pursue their second World Cup appearance.
Iraq's players have shown a strong response to Arnold’s guidance, concentrating on physical fitness, tactical strategies, and mental resilience. The team acknowledges the significance of unity, discipline, and determination as they brace for challenging encounters with potentially tough opponents from South America or the Caribbean.
The 2026 World Cup promises to be historic, expanding to 48 teams, thus opening greater avenues for nations like Iraq to showcase their talent on an international platform. Participation in this enlarged format could grant Iraqi football new global visibility, fostering further progress in the sport within the nation.
Fans and officials are optimistic that Iraq can mirror the determination displayed during the UAE matches. The team's impressive performance in the fifth round of Asian qualifiers reaffirms their capability to compete at elevated levels while maintaining composure during crucial moments.
Arnold concluded, “We are focused, optimistic, and prepared to face whoever comes our way. Our goal is to excel, uphold Iraqi football's honor, and secure a World Cup berth. Every detail matters, and we are thoroughly preparing for this chance.”
With meticulous planning, experienced coaching, and enthusiastic players, Iraq aims to make a formidable push towards returning to the World Cup stage and competing amongst the elite in 2026.
