Dubai – The Afghanistan cricket team has officially revealed its 15-member lineup for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, set to unfold in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. Captain Rashid Khan will lead the squad, which features returning all-rounder Gulbadin Naib and fast bowler Naveen Ul Haq, both of whom strengthen the team's roster.
Naveen Ul Haq, back in action after shouldering a recent injury, enhances Afghanistan's bowling unit. The squad continues to include left-handed middle-order batsman Shahidullah Kamal and wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Ishaq, both of whom are consistent performers.
Emerging talent Abdullah Ahmadzai has made the main squad, underscoring the team's commitment to investing in new players. Fazal Haq Farooqi, who had fewer appearances recently, is also considered for both the upcoming series against West Indies and the World Cup.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman's inclusion necessitates AM Ghazanfar's addition to the reserve list, along with middle-order batter Ijaz Ahmadzai and promising fast bowler Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi.
To gear up for the World Cup, Afghanistan will compete in a three-match T20I series against the West Indies from January 19 to 22 in the UAE, utilizing the chosen squad.
In the previous T20 World Cup held in 2024, Afghanistan achieved a milestone by reaching their first semi-final, where they faced defeat against South Africa. This year, the squad is eager to build on its legacy.
Naseeb Khan, CEO of ACB, stated, “Afghan Atalan had a remarkable performance in the last T20 World Cup. Hosting the West Indies before the tournament gives us an excellent opportunity to sharpen our skills while adapting to the Asian playing conditions.”
ACB Chief Selector Ahmad Shah Sulimankhil remarked, “The selection process was tough. The return of Gulbadin Naib is a significant advantage, and Naveen Ul Haq's comeback diversifies our pace options. Omitting AM Ghazanfar was a tough decision but vital due to Mujeeb's return. Shahidullah Kamal's impressive form and left-handed batting further enhance the team's equilibrium.”
Afghanistan is positioned in Pool D along with New Zealand, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada. Their campaign kicks off against New Zealand on February 8 in Chennai.
