In a significant diplomatic victory, Qatar's emergency proposal has garnered overwhelming support during the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Istanbul, Turkey.

This landmark event marks the first instance of an emergency agenda item by an Arab nation being successfully adopted by the IPU Assembly, underscoring important strides in Arab parliamentary diplomacy.

Emphasis on Ceasefires and Peace Initiatives

The proposal, termed “The urgent need for coordinated parliamentary efforts to uphold ceasefire agreements and support peace in the Middle East and beyond,” highlights several crucial aspects:

This initiative emerges amidst growing global tensions, highlighting the urgent need for unified international action.

Qatar Takes the Lead With Global Support

The Qatari delegation, spearheaded by HE Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, hailed the approval as a major diplomatic achievement. He noted that this development signals an expanding global acknowledgment of the importance of actionable parliamentary measures in tackling international crises.

He reiterated that parliamentary diplomacy is essential for:

  • Reinforcing ceasefires

  • Facilitating constructive dialogue

  • Setting the stage for political negotiations

  • Advancing global security and peace

Support from Across the Globe

The proposal was co-supported by several nations, including:

  • Australia
