Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a cautious but clear signal to the United States regarding proposals linked to a possible peace deal in Ukraine. According to the Kremlin, senior Russian and American officials have already made contact after Moscow received written ideas from Washington about ending the conflict. While no final position has been announced, the message from Russia suggests that dialogue is still open, though highly sensitive.
On December 26, the Kremlin confirmed that Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s top foreign policy aide, spoke by telephone with several members of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov shared this information but did not reveal the exact timing of the call. He stressed that these talks happened only after Russia carefully reviewed the proposals sent by the United States.
The documents reportedly reached Moscow through Kirill Dmitriev, a Russian envoy, who returned with paper copies after meetings in Miami over the weekend. Russian officials examined the proposals in detail before authorising any direct communication with Washington. According to Peskov, the discussions were held on behalf of President Putin, and both sides agreed to keep talking.
Russia has chosen to remain silent on the contents of the proposals. Peskov said the Kremlin does not want to comment publicly, as open remarks could harm ongoing efforts. This silence shows how delicate the situation is, with both sides trying to avoid words that could slow or damage negotiations.
Reports in Russia’s Kommersant newspaper added another layer to the story. The newspaper claimed that Putin told a group of leading Russian business figures that he could consider exchanging some territories currently under Russian control in Ukraine. However, the report also said that Russia would want full control of the Donbas region. When asked about this claim, Peskov did not confirm or deny it, stating only that Ukraine peace discussions were mentioned in general terms during the meeting.
The Kremlin’s response reflects a careful balance. On one hand, Russia is showing willingness to stay engaged with the United States. On the other, it is guarding its position closely and avoiding any public commitment. This approach suggests that Moscow wants room to negotiate without pressure from headlines or public opinion.
For the global community, these developments signal a small but important moment. Direct contact between Russian and U.S. officials indicates that diplomatic channels remain active despite ongoing tensions. Whether this dialogue leads to real progress will depend on future talks and the ability of both sides to find common ground. For now, Putin’s message appears measured: Russia is listening, talking, and keeping its next steps firmly under control.
