British children’s author David Walliams has been dropped by his publisher after reports of serious complaints about his behavior toward staff. HarperCollins UK confirmed that it will no longer publish new books by Walliams after looking into claims raised by junior female employees.
The decision became public after a report by the Daily Telegraph said the publisher had carried out an internal investigation. The newspaper reported that several concerns were raised about Walliams’ conduct, leading the company to take action.
Walliams, who is 54, is one of the most well-known children’s writers in the UK. His books are popular with young readers and families around the world. However, the recent allegations have cast a shadow over his long and successful career.
In a statement shared with the Daily Telegraph, HarperCollins UK said the decision was made after careful thought and under the direction of its new leadership. The publisher said Walliams had been informed of the decision.
The company said it takes the wellbeing of its employees very seriously and has clear processes for reporting and reviewing concerns. HarperCollins added that it would not comment further on internal matters to protect the privacy of those involved.
According to the Daily Telegraph, one of the women who raised concerns received a financial settlement worth a five-figure amount and later left the company. The report also said that some junior employees were kept away from Walliams after the investigation.
HarperCollins did not confirm these specific details but did not deny that an investigation had taken place.
Walliams’ representatives did not respond to requests for comment. He has not made a public statement about the allegations.
David Walliams first became famous in the early 2000s as part of the comedy duo behind the television show “Little Britain,” alongside Matt Lucas. The show brought him wide recognition across Britain.
Later, Walliams built a highly successful career as a children’s author. He has sold more than 60 million books worldwide, with his work translated into 55 languages. His stories are widely read in schools and libraries.
His first children’s novel, “The Boy in the Dress,” was published in 2008 and was praised for its message of acceptance. Other popular books include “Billionaire Boy” and “Gangsta Granny.”
The decision by HarperCollins UK marks a major shift in Walliams’ publishing future. Losing a major publisher is a serious step and reflects growing pressure on companies to respond strongly to workplace complaints.
The case also highlights a wider change in the publishing industry and other creative fields. Companies are now under greater pressure to ensure safe working environments and to act quickly when staff raise concerns, no matter how famous the person involved may be.
HarperCollins UK is the British arm of a global publishing company owned by News Corp. The company appointed Kate Elton as its new chief executive in October, following the departure of its previous CEO.
For many readers, especially children and parents, the news may be upsetting. Walliams’ books have been part of many childhoods. However, the situation also sends a clear message about accountability and respect in the workplace.
As discussions continue, the case is likely to influence how publishers handle similar complaints in the future and how they balance creative success with responsibility toward employees.
