Pope Leo XIV Advocates for Unity and Visits Angola Following Cameroon

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

On Saturday, Pope Leo XIV stressed the urgent necessity for “structures of solidarity” aimed at uplifting marginalized communities as he concluded his time in Cameroon before heading to Angola, marking the third leg of his African tour.

Mass at Yaounde: A Grand Gathering

The Pope officiated a significant Mass at Yaounde Airport, graced by thousands, including the world’s oldest current leader, President Paul Biya, aged 93.

The event was filled with emotion, exhibiting the strong Catholic faith rooted in Cameroon, where nearly a third of the population identifies as Catholic. A remarkable show of devotion saw some attendees with disabilities being brought to the Mass in wheelbarrows by their families.

Messages of Dignity and Accountability

In his French homily, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that human dignity must serve as the bedrock for societies. He urged communities to establish systems that can provide mutual support in times of crises—be they social, political, medical, or economic.

The Pope also talked about difficulties stemming from inequality and exploitation, calling on the elite to cease their exploitation of natural resources and the vulnerable for profit. Throughout his visit, he particularly encouraged youths to aspire for hope in the face of rising disillusionment.

Welcoming Angola: A Focus on Peace and Governance

Post-Mass, the Pope journeyed to Luanda, where he is set to engage with President Joao Lourenco along with governmental officials.

Angola, with its population of approximately 38 million, gained independence from Portugal in 1975 but soon fell into a brutal civil conflict lasting until 2002. This war, intensified by Cold War era rivalries among the U.S., Soviet Union, Cuba, and apartheid South Africa, claimed over half a million lives.

Locals, like Sergio Jose, express hope that the Pope's visit will bring messages of peace, reconciliation, and guidance ahead of the forthcoming elections.

Confronting Wealth Disparities: Angola’s Ongoing Challenge

Despite being a leading African producer of oil and diamonds, Angola grapples with stark inequalities. According to the World Bank, over 30% of Angolans live on less than $2.15 per day as of 2023.

The Pope is anticipated to reiterate his stance against corruption, previously describing it as “chains” that obstruct progress.

Former President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, whose tenure spanned nearly 40 years, faced allegations of misappropriating public funds. In contrast, his successor, President Lourenco, has pledged to implement anti-corruption reforms, though skeptics question their authenticity and underlying motives.

A Significant Historical Journey: Visit to Muxima

A pivotal part of the Pope’s visit to Angola will include a pilgrimage to Muxima, a notable Catholic site south of Luanda.

The Church of Our Lady of Muxima, established in the 16th century by Portuguese colonizers, symbolizes Angola’s critical role in the transatlantic slave trade, which saw millions of enslaved Africans transported from its coasts.

Pope Leo XIV, the first pontiff born in the U.S., holds a personal history tied to this narrative, with family connections to both enslaved individuals and slave owners. During his visit, he is expected to pray the Rosary at Muxima, honoring its deep spiritual and historical significance.
