Australian police have launched an investigation after a threatening letter was sent to Lakemba Mosque in Sydney, just days before the start of Ramadan. This is the third threat made against the mosque in recent weeks, raising serious concerns about safety and rising tension in the community.
Lakemba Mosque, located in western Sydney, is the largest mosque in Australia. Thousands of worshippers are expected to gather there each night during Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and prayer observed by Muslims around the world.
According to local reports, the letter contained a drawing of a pig and a written threat against Muslims. Police confirmed they have taken the letter for forensic testing. Officers are increasing patrols around religious sites and community events to ensure safety.
This is not the first incident. In recent weeks, another letter was sent to the mosque showing a disturbing image of a mosque on fire. Earlier in January, a separate threatening message was sent to mosque staff. Police arrested and charged a 70-year-old man in connection with one of those earlier threats.
The Lebanese Muslim Association, which manages Lakemba Mosque, has asked the government for additional security funding. The group has requested more security guards and upgraded CCTV cameras to protect worshippers during Ramadan.
Community leaders say people are feeling worried. Bilal El-Hayek, mayor of the Canterbury-Bankstown area where Lakemba is located, said many families are anxious. Some parents have even said they are afraid to send their children to the mosque for Ramadan activities.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strongly condemned the threats. He said it is unacceptable for people to face intimidation simply for practicing their faith. He also called for calmer and more respectful public discussion across the country.
Recent reports show that anti-Muslim incidents have increased in Australia since the conflict in Gaza escalated in late 2023. The Islamophobia Register Australia reported a sharp rise in complaints after the deadly Bondi mass shooting in December, where authorities allege two attackers killed 15 people at a Jewish celebration.
Community leaders say tension has grown since that tragic event. Many believe it is important for all Australians to stand together against hate and violence.
Ramadan is meant to be a time of peace, reflection, and prayer. For many Muslims, it is one of the most important months of the year. Threats against places of worship not only cause fear but also harm the spirit of unity in society.
Police investigations are ongoing. Authorities have promised to take the threats seriously and ensure the safety of all communities.
As Ramadan approaches, leaders across Australia are urging calm, respect, and solidarity. Protecting religious freedom and community safety remains a shared responsibility for the nation.
