In a tightly contested ODI at Iqbal Stadium, Pakistan completed a successful chase of 264, winning by two wickets with two balls remaining in Karachi. Salman provided the innings' backbone with a decisive 62 that steered his side over the line in a high-pressure finish.
Opting to bowl first, Pakistan witnessed a solid start from South Africa as their openers combined for a 98-run partnership. Debutant Lhuandre Pretorius impressed on his first ODI appearance, compiling 57 off 60 deliveries before being caught at point.
Quinton de Kock, returning to international white-ball cricket after a two-year absence, contributed a measured 63 to anchor the Proteas. Corbin Bosch accelerated late with a rapid 41, helping South Africa reach 263 before being dismissed with five deliveries unused.
The run chase began constructively for Pakistan, with Fakhar Zaman (45) and Saim Ayub (39) putting together an 87-run opening stand. Mohammad Rizwan, who was relieved of the captaincy last month, played a significant 55 and shared a pivotal 91-run fourth-wicket partnership with Salman.
Pakistan then faced a nervy phase, losing three wickets in consecutive overs that briefly put the target in doubt. Shaheen Shah Afridi, the newly appointed captain, composed himself alongside Salman to navigate the closing overs and secure the narrow victory.
The fixture also marked the return of international cricket to Iqbal Stadium after a 17-year hiatus. Supporters can anticipate the next ODI between the two nations at the historic venue on Thursday.
