Kim Jong Un Aims to Enhance North Korea’s Nuclear Capabilities

Post by : Mina Rahman

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is poised to reveal plans for bolstering the nation's nuclear capabilities at a significant upcoming party gathering, as per official announcements. This follows Kim's direct oversight of the recent missile test, which adds to a series of launches that have escalated regional tensions.

He has initiated an “expansion” and modernization of missile production, indicating a concentrated effort to upgrade the country’s strategic arsenal. The specifics of these initiatives are anticipated to be disclosed during the ninth Communist Party congress, the first since 2021, which is set for the upcoming weeks.

During the congress, North Korea’s leadership will unveil a new five-year blueprint focused on defense and economic growth. Kim highlighted the recent test of a large-caliber multiple rocket launcher as a crucial advancement in enhancing their strategic deterrent, noting its capacity for precise targeting.

In the test, missiles successfully reached targets 358.5 kilometers away, directed toward the Sea of Japan. Reports indicate that some projectiles landed outside North Korea’s Exclusive Economic Zone. South Korea’s military detected several short-range ballistic missiles launched from north of Pyongyang following the same trajectory.

Kim cautioned that these advancements would lead to “excruciating mental agony” for any entities that might provoke military conflict with North Korea. Experts speculate that the new rocket system could incorporate advanced navigation technology to counter GPS interference, thereby enhancing its accuracy.

The missile test was attended by Kim’s daughter, Kim Ju Ae, along with top missile officials, underscoring the significance of this military progression. Despite various developmental challenges, Kim extolled the test as a key leap in strengthening North Korea’s strategic capabilities.
