Ole Miss Stuns Georgia 39-34 in CFP Quarterfinal Showdown

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a stunning matchup at the Sugar Bowl, Ole Miss triumphed over third-seeded Georgia with a score of 39-34 in the College Football Playoff (CFP) quarterfinals, led by the exceptional performance of quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and kicker Lucas Carneiro.

Chambliss threw for 362 yards and two touchdowns, executing critical plays when it mattered most. Carneiro clinched the victory with a 47-yard field goal just as the clock ran out, marking Ole Miss’s second playoff win since defensive coordinator Pete Golding took the reins as head coach following Lane Kiffin's exit to LSU on November 30.

Reflecting on the team's journey, Chambliss stated, “We faced doubts from the start and even after our coach departed. All we wanted was to enjoy the game, and I believe that’s shining through now.” Golding commended his players for their focus and determination amidst pressure.

Georgia, ranked No. 3, put up a strong fight under coach Kirby Smart, who described the encounter as an “incredible college football game” that showcased the competitiveness of the CFP. Despite being down 34-24 late in the game, Georgia staged a comeback to equalize before Carneiro's decisive kick.

Highlight moments included Chambliss’s impressive 40-yard completion to De’Zhaun Stribling on a crucial third down, which paved the way for the final field goal. Additionally, a safety against Georgia contributed to Ole Miss’s crucial win.

Both quarterbacks exhibited remarkable composure, with Chambliss consistently escaping pressure and sustaining drives, while Georgia’s Gunner Stockton delivered two fourth-down conversions and rushed for two touchdowns despite tough hits.

In terms of offense, Ole Miss outgained Georgia, recording 473 yards compared to 343. Harrison Wallace III stood out with 156 receiving yards and one touchdown, and Kewan Lacy contributed with 98 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

This thrilling victory propels Ole Miss into the CFP semifinals, where they will meet Miami at the Fiesta Bowl, continuing their remarkable postseason journey under Golding’s guidance.
