Post by : Mina Rahman

In a thrilling NBA Cup encounter, Onyeka Okongwu reached a significant benchmark previously set by Paul Millsap during the Atlanta Hawks’ face-off against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Now in his sixth season with the Hawks, Okongwu has emerged as a vital component of the team, especially noted for his inside scoring and rebounding abilities.

During 34 minutes on the hardwood, he tallied 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks, successfully hitting 8 of 14 field goals, including 2 of 5 from the three-point line.

His two blocks tied him with Millsap for the 13th spot in the Hawks' all-time blocks list, marking a total of 348 blocks—a notable accomplishment for the franchise.

The match was fiercely contested, with Atlanta initially leading 33-23 at the end of the first quarter. However, Cleveland turned the tide by halftime. The Hawks reclaimed control in the second half, boasting quick ball movement and effective transition scoring, tallying 36 assists against 14 turnovers, and netting 36 points on fast breaks, compared to the Cavaliers’ 29 assists and 17 turnovers.

A total of seven players from Atlanta notched double digits in scoring, led by Jalen Johnson who achieved a triple-double with 29 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists. Contributions also came from Nickeil Alexander-Walker with 28 points, Zaccharie Risacher with 16, and Dyson Daniels who posted 10 points and nine assists, alongside Okongwu's efforts.

With this victory, the Hawks’ record improves to 12-8, securing fifth place in the Eastern Conference, tied with both Cleveland and Orlando, and just trailing the New York Knicks. Atlanta’s next challenge is against the Philadelphia 76ers on the road on Nov. 30 at 6 p.m.
