Karachi's Gas Shortage Triggers Hazardous Storage Practices

Post by : Shakul

Karachi is currently grappling with a significant gas shortage that is disrupting the daily lives of its residents, compelling them to resort to unsafe and unconventional methods for their cooking needs. One alarming trend that has surfaced involves using plastic balloons to store cooking gas.

In neighborhoods like Orangi Town and Mominabad, locals are utilizing specially designed balloons to capture gas during brief intervals when the supply resumes. These filled balloons serve as an alternative fuel source throughout the day, allowing families to cope with the ongoing crisis.

For many residents, this method is borne out of necessity rather than choice. The irregular gas supply and low pressure leave households struggling to prepare meals and perform daily tasks.

The balloons used for this purpose can be purchased in local markets, costing between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500. Once filled, they are detached and stored within homes, functioning as a temporary fuel reserve until the next gas supply window opens.

However, experts in safety are sounding alarms about the dangers of this practice. They caution that storing gas in plastic balloons poses significant risks, including potential explosions from heat, friction, or even minor sparks.

Analysts have likened these gas-filled balloons to “mobile bombs,” particularly in densely populated areas where housing is in close proximity. The likelihood of fire accidents and extensive damage escalates significantly due to these unsafe storage methods.

The unfolding crisis has prompted urgent appeals from authorities and gas supply companies for remedial action. Experts assert that addressing infrastructure issues and ensuring a consistent gas supply are vital steps to prevent the proliferation of such hazardous practices.

This situation is symptomatic of broader energy challenges, exacerbated by disruptions in global supply chains. International tensions and instability in key energy-producing regions have intensified the pressure on fuel availability, indirectly impacting local distribution systems.

As the shortage lingers, residents find themselves trapped between the necessity for daily sustenance and severe safety concerns. The crisis underscores an urgent need for reliable energy solutions and heightened public safety awareness to avert potential calamities.
