The Kingdom of Bahrain, serving as the President of the United Nations Security Council this month, presided over a significant open debate centered on “The Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question.” The session was led by Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Numerous high-ranking officials participated, including Khaled Khiari, Espen Barth Eide, and Tony Blair.
During his remarks, Dr. Al Zayani reiterated Bahrain’s firm dedication to fostering international peace and security. He emphasized the necessity for a fair and enduring resolution to the Palestinian issue, underscoring its crucial role in achieving regional stability.
Bahrain expressed unwavering support for the Palestinian people's rights, advocating for their entitlement to self-determination and the establishment of a sovereign state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. This stance aligns with the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant international resolutions.
The Foreign Minister also pointed out the importance of enacting UN Security Council Resolution 2803 as a pivotal move towards ending the Gaza conflict, reinforcing the ceasefire, and backing the proposed “Board of Peace.”
Moreover, Bahrain’s leadership, particularly King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, has actively engaged in peace endeavors. The King's involvement in the inaugural Board of Peace meeting in Washington, chaired by Donald Trump, signifies Bahrain’s robust diplomatic and humanitarian participation.
Dr. Al Zayani accentuated the significance of dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful resolutions. He called for adherence to the legal and historical status of Jerusalem, safeguarding of holy sites, and support for the custodianship responsibilities of Jordan along with the Al Quds Committee, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
Bahrain firmly denounced forced displacements and any practices aimed at altering demographics in Palestinian territories. Additionally, it urged an immediate stop to the illegal expansion of settlements in the West Bank while cautioning against actions that escalate tensions and extremism.
The minister further stated that achieving long-term peace necessitates addressing broader regional challenges. He advocated for a peaceful resolution of tensions with Iran, advocating dialogue, respect for sovereignty, and adherence to international law. He also highlighted the need to safeguard navigation rights in vital waterways like the Strait of Hormuz, while calling for an end to activities that jeopardize regional security.
In conclusion, Bahrain urged the international community to transition from merely managing crises to pursuing sustainable solutions through collaboration, dialogue, and diplomacy to ensure peace and stability throughout the region.
