The Israeli Defense Forces have announced the identification of police officer Ran Gvili's remains, which have been held in Gaza for over 840 days. His remains will soon be returned to Israel for burial.
Officials believe this development could facilitate a limited reopening of the Rafah Crossing, Gaza's primary connection to the outside world. Earlier, Israeli authorities had stated that progress regarding hostages was crucial for reopening the crossing.
A US-backed technocratic committee aimed at managing Gaza has indicated a likely reopening of the Rafah Crossing later this week. Nonetheless, an Israeli government representative refrained from providing a definitive timeline.
Gvili lost his life during the Hamas-led assault on October 7, 2023, which targeted southern Israel communities and set off an extensive military campaign in Gaza. At that time, he was off duty due to an injury.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the recovery of Gvili's remains an "incredible achievement for the State of Israel," emphasizing its significance for the nation.
Gvili was among the 251 individuals taken to Gaza during the October attack. Following a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in October, it was believed that 48 hostages were still in Gaza, with 28 thought to have perished. The return of all hostages—both living and deceased—was central to the initial phase of this agreement, although several points remain unresolved.
In Israel, Gvili's body's return is viewed as a healing step after months of uncertainty for the families of hostages.
Simultaneously, the United States has announced that it will shift its focus in resolving the conflict to Gaza's reconstruction and efforts for demilitarization.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem remarked that Gvili's remains recovery signifies Hamas' adherence to the agreement and expressed support for the prospective national administration for Gaza, claiming that their information contributed to locating the body.
Initially, the Rafah Crossing was expected to open during the early stages of the ceasefire, but Israeli officials raised concerns, insisting on the return of the last remaining hostages first.
Reports suggest that Israel may aim to restrict the number of Palestinians crossing into Gaza through Rafah and implement security screenings at an Israeli-controlled checkpoint.
The attack in October 2023 reportedly led to approximately 1,200 deaths in Israel, per Israeli statistics. Conversely, health authorities in Gaza estimate that over 71,000 Palestinians have died due to the military actions since then.
