Norway has remarkably achieved its ambitious goal for 2025, which aimed to eliminate the sale of new fossil-fuel passenger cars. Recent figures from the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) reveal that nearly all newly registered cars in 2025 were electric or plug-in hybrids, marking a pivotal step towards sustainable transportation in the nation.
A total of 179,549 new passenger vehicles were recorded in Norway throughout 2025. Out of these, 172,232 were fully electric, while 2,751 were plug-in hybrid models. Collectively, these zero or low-emission vehicles made up an astonishing 95.9% of new vehicle sales, a leap from 88.9% in 2024.
Moreover, an impressive 97.5% of all new cars sold last year offered plugging capabilities, emphasizing Norway's prominent role in electric vehicle uptake.
The rest of the registrations included 2,306 conventional hybrids without plug-in options, 1,773 diesel units, and only 487 petrol cars, signifying that a mere 1.3% of new vehicles registered in Norway in 2025 lacked traction batteries. Notably, there were no hydrogen-powered cars registered this year, a decrease from nine in the previous period.
Norway's vigorous advancement in electric mobility underlines its dedication to decreasing carbon emissions and nurturing a cleaner, greener future for transportation.
