As the Northeast gears up for its first major snowstorm of the season, the Midwest is in the recovery phase following disruptive snowfall and icy conditions during the Thanksgiving holiday.
Forecasts indicate that northern New England could see snowfall accumulation reaching up to 10 inches (25 cm), with some regions facing severe winds and icy weather. States likely to be impacted include Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Connecticut, and New York.
Winter storm warnings and advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service for these areas. Meteorologists are predicting snow totals of up to a foot (30 cm) by Tuesday, marking a notable start to the winter season for various communities.
This cold spell comes right after Chicago recorded over 8 inches (20 cm) of snow recently, marking the highest single-day November accumulation in the city's history. While the heavy snow in the Great Lakes region is diminishing, the new storm is on track to impact the mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
In Maine, authorities are advising residents to postpone travel as heavy snow is expected to hit coastal areas from Tuesday morning through Wednesday. The New Hampshire transportation department has also engaged the public with a playful “name-a-plow” contest for its fleet of snowplows, with last year's winner being “Ctrl-Salt-Delete.”
Pennsylvania is gearing up for substantial snowfall along the 565-mile (909 km) Turnpike system, with crews treating lanes before the storm hits. Vehicle restrictions will be enforced on several interstates starting Tuesday morning, as more than 600 operators and safety personnel stand by to ensure clear roads, with 23 maintenance sheds ready to function around the clock.
Travelers still dealing with the impact of Thanksgiving delays in the Midwest have faced significant issues, including hundreds of flight cancellations and delays in Chicago due to the recent snowfall. Many passengers encountered lengthy waits as connecting flights were often postponed for hours.
Airports nationwide are actively de-icing planes, while roadways remain busy despite snow removal efforts. Officials are urging caution and advising travelers to allow additional time for journeys under winter driving conditions.
