NATO remains strong and united despite growing global tensions, according to Hanno Pevkur. His statement comes at a time when questions are being raised about the future of the alliance and the role of the United States in defending its partners.
Pevkur clearly said that NATO will not collapse and expressed full confidence that the United States will continue to defend its allies. He explained that like any long-term partnership, disagreements can happen, but they do not weaken the foundation of the alliance.
His remarks follow ongoing discussions linked to Donald Trump, who has previously questioned whether the United States should always support NATO members if they do not meet defence spending targets. These comments have created concern among some European countries about long-term security commitments.
However, Estonia’s minister dismissed these fears and stressed that the alliance remains important for both Europe and the United States. He pointed out that security is shared, and both sides benefit from working together under NATO.
At the same time, he acknowledged a key issue—Europe still depends heavily on U.S. military support. He said European nations need to increase their defence spending and improve their own military strength to become more prepared for future threats.
This concern is especially important due to rising tensions with Russia. The ongoing war in Ukraine has already changed the security environment in Europe. Many experts believe that Russia could pose a long-term threat, making NATO’s unity more important than ever.
The debate over defence spending is not new. NATO members have agreed to spend a certain share of their national income on defence, but not all countries have met this goal. Estonia is one of the countries that has increased its spending, setting an example for others.
The current global situation has made strong alliances more important. Conflicts in different regions, including Europe and the Middle East, have increased uncertainty. In such times, NATO acts as a key force that helps maintain balance and prevent larger conflicts.
Despite differences in opinion among its members, NATO continues to function as a strong military alliance. Leaders on both sides of the Atlantic have repeated their commitment to cooperation and collective defence.
Estonia’s message is clear and direct—NATO is not breaking apart, and the United States remains a reliable partner. This reassurance is important, especially for smaller countries that depend on the alliance for their security.
The situation also shows that alliances are not perfect, but they are built to handle challenges. With better coordination, increased defence efforts, and continued trust, NATO is likely to remain a central pillar of global security.
