Launch of DEMU Trains Enhances Yangon-Mandalay Travel

Post by : Shakul

Myanmar will bolster its railway service with the introduction of modern air-conditioned DEMU passenger express trains along crucial routes, prominently including the Yangon-Mandalay line. This new initiative, launching on May 1, 2026, comes as directed by the President.

As stated by the Ministry of Transport, the new DEMU trains operated by Myanmar Railways will offer quicker and more comfortable journeys for travelers between major cities, representing a significant step in the modernization of the nation’s public transportation.

The Yangon-Mandalay line will feature significant stops such as Bago, Taungoo, Nay Pyi Taw, Yamethin, and Kyaukse, enhancing regional connectivity and accessibility for commuters.

Fare for the new service will be set at 48,000 kyats for upper class and 34,000 kyats for first class, providing various pricing tiers based on passenger comfort levels.

Beyond the Yangon-Mandalay route, Myanmar Railways plans to introduce DEMU services on the route to Nay Pyi Taw, with frequent stops at major stations, thereby improving links between the country's administrative and commercial hubs.

Tickets will be available through the Online Railways Ticketing and Payment system, simplifying the purchasing experience for travelers.

Officials have noted that as demand rises, the railway infrastructure will be broadened, potentially including additional train coaches and new routes to further boost travel capacity.

The rollout of the modern DEMU trains underscores Myanmar’s dedication to enhancing its transport framework, aiming to deliver safer, more effective, and enjoyable travel choices for its public.
