Colorado, USA:
A fatal incident involving a mountain lion has resulted in the death of a woman on a well-frequented hiking path in northern Colorado, potentially marking the state’s first deadly encounter with this predator in over two decades.
The event unfolded around 12:15 pm on New Year’s Day along the Crosier Mountain trail in Larimer County, as reported by officials from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).
Witnesses on the path described seeing a mountain lion near a person who was found lying unresponsive on the ground. Efforts to scare the animal away involved throwing rocks, which successfully prompted it to retreat.
CPW spokeswoman Kara Van Hoose indicated that “one of the bystanders was a doctor and confirmed the absence of a pulse,” leading to the woman being declared dead on-site.
Emergency Response and Search Operation
A comprehensive emergency response was initiated involving wildlife officials, sheriff deputies, park police, and volunteer firefighters. A biologist, engaged in an annual deer assessment, participated in the search airborne from a helicopter.
Specially trained tracking dogs were deployed to locate the mountain lion scent, with authorities noting this strategy is highly effective in identifying the relevant animals.
Mountain Lions Euthanized
As part of the ongoing investigation, two mountain lions were euthanized. One lion was shot at the scene but managed to escape, only to be located and killed later. A second lion was euthanized in accordance with state regulations that necessitate the removal of wildlife involved in human fatalities to safeguard public health.
Although two lions were euthanized, officials clarified that mountain lions are known for their territorial behavior, suggesting that likely only one was involved in the attack.
Investigation Ongoing
Pathologists will carry out necropsies on both animals to assess for neurological conditions like rabies and to check for human DNA. The county coroner will release the victim’s identity and the precise cause of death at a later time.
Rare but Serious Incidents
CPW highlighted that mountain lion encounters leading to attacks on humans are remarkably rare. Since 1990, Colorado has documented merely 28 incidents, with the last recorded fatality occurring in 1999.
Authorities explained that mountain lions tend to be more visible during winter as they follow prey such as deer and elk to lower elevations in pursuit of food.
Safety Advice for the Public
For public safety, wildlife authorities recommend that hikers remain vigilant and should take precautions upon encountering a mountain lion. Suggested measures include making loud noises, raising arms or objects to appear larger, keeping direct eye contact, and gradually backing away without turning around.
Mountain Lion Population in Colorado
Colorado is estimated to house between 3,800 to 4,400 mountain lions, excluding young. Once regarded as big game, their population has grown steadily since 1965 due to focused conservation management policies.
These majestic animals hold the widest geographic range of any native mammal in the Americas, spanning from western Canada to Argentina, but now primarily inhabit the western states of the U.S.
Adult mountain lions can reach lengths exceeding six feet, weighing 130 pounds or more, and they predominantly hunt deer through stealth, often launching from trees or rocky terrains.
